The Owner

Janet Brown - Owner
Janet Brown - Owner

Janet Brown is the owner and director of Faux Biz, LLC in Auburn, Alabama. As a former elementary school teacher with a master's degree in the Diverse Learner K-12, Janet has a broad teaching background with twelve years teaching experience in Texas and Colorado. In 1998, she was selected for inclusion of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Janet was selected to represent her school and the district as the gifted coordinator for teaching reading. After leaving Colorado, she was hired to write a training manual for elementary teachers on integrating gifted teaching principals with the newly adopted reading curriculum. Over the course of her teaching career, Janet was asked to present several workshops for teachers in and around the school districts in which she served.

After relocating to Alabama in June of 2000, Janet decided to pursue her love of art, design and decorating. She began her training to become a professional decorative artist, studying and completing coursework with master decorative artists across the country.

Janet established her first decorative finishing company, Color My World, in 2001. She operated Color My World from her home until 2005 when she started a new business, Faux Biz, LLC. It was in February of that year that Janet's passions for the decorative arts and teaching were joined when the doors of her new studio/showroom were opened.

Faux Biz not only serves as a teaching studio and retailer for many different decorative finish lines, but continues to serve clients in contract field work. Janet serves as the distributor of Bella Vernici Concrete Overlay for Alabama and Georgia. She is a licensed dealer of Adicolor products as well as a dealer of Faux Effects International's Silver Label line. She retails many other product lines, such as those of TRG, SEPP, AMPS (Antique Mirror Patina Solution), Modello, Royal Design Studio and Robert Elmore Unique Faux Finishing Materials. Janet has also developed the Bellezza line of vinyl stencils, which she and a local sign company manufacture and retail.

With ever expanding client and student bases, Faux Biz has not gone unnoticed. Since the store's opening, February 24, 2005, Janet's work and studio were featured in the Spring 2005 issue of East Alabama Living magazine, Faux Effects World magazine's 2005 Anniversary edition, and the December/January 2007 issue of Southern Views Magazine. On January 18, 2007, Janet appeared on the front page of the Life and Home section of the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.

Janet was published in the April 2007 issues of Concrete Construction Magazine and Residential Concrete Magazine for her work at the 2007 World of Concrete show where she was chosen as one of twelve demonstrators internationally for the Artistry in Concrete exhibit. Janet and her crew constructed a bathroom designed to resemble a nautilus shell. The entire structure, including the commode and vessel sink, were overlaid with Bella Vernici concrete overlay. The result was just what one would expect from Bella Vernici products - stunning!

Faux Biz, LLC was most recently published in the September 21, 2007 issue of the Opelika-Auburn news' publication East Alabama Home Seeker.

While Janet enjoys working with clients and doing contract work, her main passion is teaching others. While she teaches classes on numerous decorative finishes for walls, cabinets, furniture, floors, etc. at her studio in Auburn, she has decided to accept offers to teach at other studios across the US. In particular, Janet has developed a Bella Vernici II class to demonstrate advanced application and finishing techniques (including walls) for the Bella Vernici products which includes using the new lime-based overlay material, BrownStone. It's just another way that Janet has followed her motto to "think outside the box!"
